PM Surya Ghar for West Bengal homes: where to start

Check residential eligibility, application steps and commissioning requirements before relying on a subsidy.

Solar panels on a residential rooftop amid green surroundings

The short answer

PM Surya Ghar supports eligible residential rooftop solar. Check the current national-portal rules and your electricity distributor’s process before ordering a system. Approval and subsidy are not automatic.[4]

Start with your local electricity connection

For a home in Siliguri or elsewhere in West Bengal, first check the distributor named on your bill. WBSEDCL publishes its rooftop solar application process.[1] If another distributor supplies your home, ask that provider. Your address alone does not confirm approval, metering terms or scheme eligibility.

Understand the published subsidy slabs

Official PIB guidance lists Rs 30,000 for a 1 kW system, Rs 60,000 for 2 kW, and a maximum of Rs 78,000 for 3 kW or larger systems.[4] These are subsidy figures, not installation prices. Eligibility and scheme requirements still apply. Do not assume a larger system increases the household subsidy beyond the published cap.

Check eligibility before ordering

PIB's published eligibility summary requires an Indian citizen, ownership of a house with a suitable roof, a valid electricity connection and no previous subsidy for solar panels.[4] Treat this as an initial checklist, not a complete decision on a particular application. Shared roofs, societies, existing systems and unusual ownership arrangements need specific checks under current rules.

Start on the official portal

Use pmsuryaghar.gov.in. PIB's process begins with registration using the state, electricity distributor, consumer number, mobile number and email.[4] Follow the portal's current instructions and any approval requirements. Verify the selected vendor's registration rather than relying on an advertisement or a verbal subsidy promise.

Installation is not the final step

The published process describes installation by a registered vendor after feasibility approval, followed by submission of plant details and an application for net metering.[4] Follow the current workflow for your connection. Confirm who submits each document and retain copies of the quotation, equipment details and installation records.

Commissioning comes before the claim

PIB guidance describes a commissioning certificate after net-meter installation and DISCOM inspection. The applicant then submits bank details and a cancelled cheque through the portal for subsidy payment.[4] Use the official channel for sensitive documents. Do not treat a quotation, installed panels or a survey visit as proof that the subsidy has been approved.

Plan cash flow without a payment guarantee

Agree the supplier's payment schedule separately from the subsidy process. Subsidy is up to Rs 78,000, subject to eligibility, and credited after commissioning and required verification.[4] Brijstar cannot guarantee approval or a payment date. This guide does not promise a loan, interest rate or automatic reduction in an upfront invoice.

Keep local billing rules separate

Ask your electricity distributor about connection requirements, metering, export treatment and charges. Do not assume a particular West Bengal tariff or net-metering outcome from national scheme guidance. Do not apply household subsidy figures to a factory, hotel or other commercial proposal.

Know the limits of this guide

PIB and MNRE explain the published scheme.[3][4] Confirm current portal instructions for your application.[2] This guide promises no zero bill, fixed savings or payment deadline.

Common questions

Does every household receive Rs 78,000?

No. The subsidy is up to Rs 78,000 and depends on capacity, eligibility and scheme requirements. It is credited after commissioning and the required claim process.[4]

Is subsidy deducted from the installation price upfront?

Do not assume so. The official process places the subsidy claim after commissioning. Agree the installation price and payment schedule separately.[4]

Will a system above 3 kW get more subsidy?

The cited standard household guidance caps subsidy at Rs 78,000 for 3 kW or larger systems, subject to eligibility. Confirm current rules for your application.[4]

Can Brijstar approve my application?

No. Official eligibility, inspection and subsidy decisions sit with the relevant authorities. An installer quotation is not an approval.

Where should I check my application?

Use the official PM Surya Ghar portal and your electricity distributor's designated channels. Never share passwords or one-time passcodes in a website enquiry.
